Scientific breakthroughs happen on regular basis. Some are important to others and some aren’t. However, the new scientific discovery has to do with teenagers and their skin condition

It might sound a little weird but the properties found in marijuana have been scientifically proven to reduce acne breakouts and even fade your acne scars. I know, pretty amazing! But it’s true the properties found in marijuana can reduce the effect of acne because of the similar chemical compounds we have with the famous plant. It has also been discovered that marijuana keeps the skin healthy, but hold you horses. Dr. Rob Ashton says there’s no need to smoke the plant due to the already endogenous cannabanoids present in our bodies. So the question floating around the skin care world concerning this issue is “Can it work in our body and can we teach it our bodies to produce more”?

Acne Scars Caused by Excessive Tissue Formation

The scars caused by increased tissue formation are called keloids or hypertrophic scars. The word hypertrophy means overgrowth. Both hypertrophic and keloid scars are associated with excessive amounts of the cell substance collagen. Overproduction of collagen is a response of skin cells to damage. The excess collagen becomes piled up in fibrous masses, resulting in a characteristic firm, smooth, usually irregularly-shaped scar.

The typical keloid or hypertrophic scar is 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter, but some may be 1 centimeter or larger. Keloid scars tend to genetic—that is, abnormal growth of scar tissue is more likely to occur in susceptible people, who often are people with relatives who have similar types of scars.

Hypertrophic and keloid acne scars can persist for years, but may reduce in size over time.

Acne scars associated with loss of tissue, similar to scars that appear from chicken pox, and are more common than keloids and hypertrophic scars.

Acne is the expression for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, zits and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms or legs. Acne affects mostly teenagers, but the disease is not restricted to any age range; adults in their 20s – even into their 40s – can get acne. Although acne is not a life threatening condition, acne can be frustrating, disfiguring and annoying. When severe or if you pop your pimples, acne can turn to serious and permanent acne scars. Even less severe cases can end up with acne scars.

Acne Scarring

Before talking about acne scars, there are spots that may look like acne scars but are not, even though they are not true acne scars and disappear in time, they are visible and can cause embarrassment.

Macules or “pseudo-scars” are flat, red or reddish spots that are the final stage of most inflamed acne lesions. After an inflamed acne lesion flattens, a macule may remain for up to 6 months. When the macule eventually disappears, no trace of it will remain, unlike an acne scar.

It occurs more frequently in darker-skinned people, but occasionally is seen in people with white skin. Early treatment may minimize the development of post-inflammatory pigmentation. Some post-inflammatory pigmentation may persist for up to 18 months, especially with excessive sun exposure. Chemical peeling may speed up the disappearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
